Ironically, "This Year" is from last year. One year ago today, to be precise. It's not the greatest New Year's song ever done. But it is different. And we like different here at Stubby's. Sort of an Indie Alt Rock Hip Hop thing. And I do like the part where the guy makes his resolutions and then admits he won't keep them, so let's forget all about 'em--especially that one about not drinking. Just a reminder: don't drink and drive. You'll find "This Year" by Noterock free on Bandcamp.

Ah, now that's what I'm talking about. Some fine holiday Indie Rock from London's My Tiger My Timing. Led by siblings Anna and James Vincent, My Tiger My Timing have their feet firmly planted on the ladder of stardom, now, and have to be considered "one to watch" in 2012. Get the free single "See You On New Year's Day" using the Soundcloud widget above or from the band's web site. 1. Christmas Is For Our Hearts - Find Vienna 2. There was nothing from them last year and no label activity at all this year. DOWNLOAD AT FILTHY LITTLE ANGELS Out of the blue, and in honor of the label's 100th release, they've collected up all of their Christmas selections into one massive zip file. 96 festive favorites together for the first (and last) time, plus some bonus tracks. Just in case you were playing along all those years, each of the Christmas tunes (though not the bonus tracks) links up to its own mp3. If you're trying to figure the keepers here, my favorites were from SAY, Helen Love, And What Will Be Left Of Them, The Vichy Government, Hilary & the Democrats, Das Wunderlust, and Meg. I'd thought the Long Blondes were on one, too, but I'm not seeing them here (if you see them, grab em). Essentials are anything from SAY and "Have Yourself A Filthy Little Christmas" from And What Will Be Left Of Them. Might as well add The Vichy Government's cover of The Long Blondes "Christmas Is Cancelled" as well. And never let it be said that we left you with nothing to do after Christmas. This is very forward leaning stuff--some of it quite heavy. So, you know, not all of it is easily accessible to broad tastes. I tend to be drawn to pretty pop music, myself, so I can recommend The Sunturns, The Beards and The Honeytraps right off the top. I also really dug Nive Nielsen (we had them on Boxing Day) and was quite intrigued by Scarlet Chives (even if I didn't understand a word of it). Magnus was quite good with their electronic mashup. I'd like to listen to Therese Aune and Phaedra when more relaxed; Phaedra, in particular, seemed very pretty in a Pop Folk vein. And I loved Sassy Kraimspri's Rocked up "Santa Baby". That said, you can keep Deathcrush and their rendition of "Merry Christmas Baby", if that's what it was. Learn more about the bands, if you can read Norwegian, at the Alternativ Julekalendar website. Otherwise, you might be best off downloading your tracks from their Soundcloud platform.
1. Baby, It's Cold Outside 2. Sleigh Ride 2. Masters Of War 4. Santa Baby Our good friend Ken, over at The Sounds Of Christmas, sends word of a free holiday EP from pop rocker's Persephone's Bees. "Sleigh Ride", which appeared on last year's "The Sounds Of Christmas 2" CD, is bloody brilliant and ought to be in your collection already. If not, there's no more reason needed for you to gobble up this free EP. "Santa Baby" was their free contribution to last year's festivities. Bob Dylan's "Masters Of War" and "Baby It's Cold Outside" are newly recorded. The latter gets a snappy and jazzy beat generation workout. Very cool. Head to the Bees' Facebook page--specifically this post--to get the download link. Like a lot of bands that try to do the annual thing, Death On Two Wheels ran into a time crunch this year and couldn't produce a free period of sufficient length to record a Christmas single. Death On Two Wheels is focused and spending every waking moment preparing their new album, coming in 2012. The Indie Rock band from Atlanta didn't forget the Christmas season though. Instead, they're offering up a three-song EP, which includes their previous two Christmas takes, "Blue Christmas" and last year's "Jingle Bell Rock", as well as a live acoustic version of "A Song For Em...". The EP is free on Bandcamp. The first thing I liked about "Coventry Carol" from Jaggery was that they describe their sound as "torture chamber pop"--you know, as opposed to chamber pop. But that wicked sense of humor is only going to get you so far. The second thing I liked about Jaggery is that they're a Boston band. But, while that's a plus with me, it's not going to cut it with most anyone else. No, what we really need here is some good music. And, fortunately for Jaggery, that's what we've got in "Coventry Carol". This reminded me, in a way, of the version of "Carol Of The Bells" by Zombie Western that we had last year (and, by the way, it's free again this year) in that there's just something dark and perverse going on here. It's not the obvious things (like the Satanic whispering); it's something lurking between the notes. Can't put my finger on it, there's just something disquieting. Now, should you actually read the notes Jaggery has posted with the song (which I didn't until I decided the song was disquieting), it sure as heck OUGHT to be disquieting (which brings us back to the whole question of downer songs like "Last Christmas" that people celebrate as "festive"; but I digress). And, oddly, disquieting in the world of Stubbys House is often a positive trait, as it is here. Download "Coventry Carol" free on Bandcamp (it's "name your price"). And, when you're done, it's just a short hop over Jaggery's 2010 Christmas single "Arabian Dance" (also free on Bandcamp). That one's just plain evil. After Christmas, you might be looking for something in a New Years frock. There's a brief track on Science Fiction Theater's "name your price" EP of demos which actually has a really nice Indie Pop Rock thing going on. OK, it's only for 1:20, but that's a quality 80 seconds right there. Come the New Year, the LA band plans on pulling the EP...theoretically forever. And you will have missed your chance to acquire "In Line At A New Year's Eve Party". Now you will have to take the whole EP to get the "name your price" option. An individual track will cost you a dollar. But having to take 4 other tracks free to get a little holiday tune isn't really such a terrible thing, is it? If you end up donating, the money will go to the ASPCA, just so you know. Look for "Songs For Cold Weather" on Bandcamp. 1. Wassail - The Bend 2. Alone At Christmas - Gunn & The Damage Done 3. Jesus Under My Tree - The Navins 9. Slushter - Chlorofomula 10. (All I Want Is) A West Seattle Christmas - The Black Bangs DOWNLOAD FROM THE FEEDBACK LOUNGE If you're searching for the best in forward looking rock, you look to Seattle. And this collection of West Seattle's finest is Exhibit A. You'll get a little bit of everything on the exceptional "Tinselitis", from the bluesy Tom Waits-meets-The Grinch "Stealin' For Christmas" to the maniacal take off on "Here Comes Santa Claus", "Ho Ho Ho". My personal favorites are "On This Christmas Day", which combines Lo Fi Indie Pop with raging Punk, the guitar driven Black Bangs number "(All I Want Is) A West Seattle Christmas", and the absolutely gorgeous "Christmas Eve" from Charlie Beck. And, oh yeah, the garage jammin' "Jesus Under My Tree" from The Navins. But you can pick out your own favorites from this unique--and free--collection.
